Where The Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward
Agate Bolden, November 2008
230 Pages, Paperback, $15.00
ISBN: 1932841385
Genre: Fiction

RAW Rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

WHERE THE LINE BLEEDS captures the very essence of the Deep South. Jesmyn Ward clearly demonstrates how the never-ending land, hot and humid air and murky bayou form a unique southern culture that shapes its inhabitants.  Within her descriptive world lies the touching story of two young men whose illusive, haunting past finally comes to a clear resolution.

Jesmyn Ward's debut novel is brilliantly quiet and reflectively perceptive.  A loving family encircles a pair of twins, Joshua and Christophe, who were abandoned by an opportunistic mother and a drug dependent father.  Left with their grandmother, the twin's instinctive closeness provides an unstable shell of protection.  When high school ends, however, the balance of life shifts, as both hope to find jobs, but only Joshua accomplishes the goal.  While Joshua finds love and life, Christophe stumbles clumsily through his options, leading them both to an unexpected and life altering confrontation with the demon that haunts them all.

A Hopwood Prize award winner for the manuscript version of this novel, Jesmyn Ward's writing is reminiscent of Alice Walker in her detailed understanding of familial relationships and neat chronicling of change.  The grandmother's point of view provided the backbone to this novel.  While the writing was vibrant and engaging, there were spots where the prose slowed the story.

WHERE THE LINE BLEEDS is a literary work of art, a novel to be consumed slowly, each detail savored, creating an intimate understanding of the deep emotion behind every action.
