VISIONS OF A CRYPTIC MYSTERY: Volume One is, in the author’s words, “a dedication to Black lesbian women everywhere, about our experiences, about our emotions, and about us as human beings.”
Eternity Philops' writing, however, is a much broader testimony of life, love and living, which captures the deeper intimacies of all women. Varying her style and delivery, the short stories give a glimpse into lingering love, regret, cherished moments and revenge. The poetry is simply breathtaking. Touching. Some pieces are reflections of sincere prayer reminiscent of the biblical psalms. Others develop a nouveau approach with a classical delivery, and some resonate a sensual raw energy that is purely erotic.
In "The Other Side of the Moon," forbidden love is challenged as two best friends say goodbye to the perfect friendship and forego a chance at love’s pinnacle to maintain societal norms. The backdrop of this story is a celestial celebration that metaphorically reveals the magnificent fulfillment the friends could have achieved, but denied themselves. "Bait & Switch" is a fun story about sensual pursuit and manipulation, while "Black Lace" spans a descriptive love scene, turning want into a possible reality.
When a writer has taken time to hone her craft, to respect real literature and strive for literary perfection, it shows, and it is greatly appreciated. Eternity Philops displays her broad range of literary skill, composing a wonderful collection of stories and poetry with deft mastery.
