The Truth Is The Light by Vanessa Davis Griggs
Dafina Books, June 2010

RAW Rating: 4.0 (out of 5)

THE TRUTH IS THE LIGHT is a fascinating novel of redemption, love, and family. Ransom “Gramps” Perdue has seen much in his ninety-nine years.  As a young man, he was put in prison for an act forbidden during those times.  Once released, the one person he loved more than anyone has vanished from his life forever.

Gramps was good working with his hands and loved making things out of wood.  Little did he know the three wooden boxes he made many decades ago would unleash a cluster of past family secrets.

I took great pleasure reading Vanessa Davis Griggs' skillful execution of making the wooden boxes the heart of the story and bringing Gramps' truth to light.  She created his character with strength and warmth; a man who for ninety-nine years had travelled many paths, never wavering from his faith in God.  She also drew attention to the other characters in the novel who fell short at one point in their lives and through the grace of God was able to turn their lives around.

I am most impressed with how the title actually had a dual meaning.  Whatever we may have hidden from our past, the truth will come to light and also we can’t have light and darkness; Jesus exemplifies truth in the light and if we follow Him we’ll never be in darkness.
