Growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, Keisha was happy living with her mother, brother and younger sister.  They didn’t have much, but they had each other and that was all that mattered to her.  When she was twelve years old, Keisha began to notice changes in her mother: going out late, mood swings, and items disappearing from the house.  Food was scarce in their home and although, her brother tried to support them, his small paycheck wasn’t enough to keep them fed.  Nevertheless, Keisha continued to love her mother and prayed she would get better.  That day never came because her mother died from a drug overdose.

After her mother’s death, Keisha and her siblings go live with their Aunt Darlene and Uncle Jessie.  Life without her mother is tough, but as she starts to adjust to her new home, tragedy strikes her again.  Feeling let down by the people who are supposed to care and love her, especially God, she locks her pain inside and never tells anyone her secret.  Several years later Keisha marries her college sweetheart and life is grand until a frightful phone call she receives from her aunt and her dark past intrudes on her tranquil present.

Family secrets, drug addiction, forgiveness, and faith are the elements which make PRETTY SKELETONS a touching story.  As the story unfolded, a stream of emotions surged through me as I felt the anger and pain Keisha endured to keep her secret hidden.  I recommend reading this moving story of being “born again” and moving on.
