Grown & Gangsta by Jacki -O
Tru Publishing, February 2008
282 Pages, Paperback, $14.95
ISBN: 0980204704
Genre: Street Fiction

RAW Rating: 3.5 (out of 5)

Six friends, Monique, Tatiana, Inch, Malcolm, Iz and Quentin, all got their start from the streets and have all grown into successful adults. Some have legitimate careers and others are still hustling. Monique is an A & R rep for a record company and she is sticking by her man, Iz, who is doing a 15-year bid as the result of a drug bust. Tatiana, the gold-digger, and her undercover lover, Itch, have a scheme where they setup up professional ball players and entertainers. Their latest scam goes awry when Tatiana takes the relationship too far.

Malcolm and Quentin are successful as a Wall Street investment banker and restaurant owner, respectively. Malcolm only dates women outside of his race and he doesn’t keep those around long. Quentin manages to keep his life as a drug dealer from his wife, until one slip up occurs. Coming from a background of the Black Elite, she makes his life a living hell after realizing how he deceived her.

GROWN & GANSTA is the debut novel of rapper, Jacki-O. The story is driven by the characters’ actions, which were non-stop. As they learn and develop through their decisions, we see how they have grown, yet still keeping it gansta. I was able to warm up to the characters and get fully engaged in the story. The book contains both formatting and grammatical errors, which requires an editor’s attention. Nonetheless, I was thoroughly entertained.
