In A FRIEND OF NIKKI SUNSHINE'S by Java Bomani, the main character, Zinna, is the daughter of a business mogul who attends college to prove to her father and to herself that she is more than just Daddy's Girl. After growing up in an overprotective household, Zinna feels it's time to spread her wings and follow her dream of competing in gymnastics. While away at college, she meets Chan, a widower who can't seem to let go of his deceased wife. That is, until Zinna makes a move on his heart.
During a visit home, tragedy strikes and shakes Zinna's world. On the run from unscrupulous predators, she must learn to trust herself and others if she hopes to make it out of the situation alive.
Bomani did an exceptional job of relaying the action in the tense scenes, and Chan's character was especially likeable. Nevertheless, it took me a while to get into this book for a few reasons. First, the formatting of the book left a lot to be desired. With small, Courier font and italics and line breaks out of whack, it made for a daunting task. In addition, there seemed to be a lot of unneeded information that really didn't add to the conflict or the plot. The editing also could have been improved. There were numerous misused words, misplaced commas, and other grammatical errors that served to distract. Despite its issues, the core of this story is a worthwhile one, and with a new format, proofread, and content edit, I think this could be a great book.
