RAW Rating: 4.5 (out of 5)

Armand, a hardcore veteran to the streets, is falling fast for the innocent and alluring Monique Waters. She’s not a part of the drug game, has no idea how to operate by the code of the streets. Her sheltered life is comprised of nothing more than college studies, quality time with her mom and sister, and loving her man—or so he thought. Slowly, Armand is beginning to realize that his innocent, inexperienced girlfriend is more connected than he ever could have guessed. When his spot is ambushed and he is plunged into a war of drugs, territory, and loyalty, he finds out that he didn’t know Monique as well as he thought he did. As her secrets begin to unravel one-by-one, Armand has to come to terms with the fact that he’s in deeper than he thought and his undeniable feelings for Monique may ultimately lead to his demise.

Monique, as groomed by her family, has perfected the delusion of innocence and naivety. She can’t let Armand or anyone else know who she really is. Revealing her true identity and her family ties, could mean the fall of an empire. But when Monique finds herself lost in a whirlwind of guns, drugs, and murder, she is forced to choose between family loyalty and love.  She doesn’t know who to trust and those closest to her are questioning her allegiance. Bullets fly, lives are lost, and no one is safe. Who will be left standing when the smoke clears?

With DAUGHTER OF THE GAME, Kai has successfully crafted a compelling urban novel, full of literary adrenaline. The intricate plot was carefully crafted with colorful characters, explosive drama, and relentless suspense. The story took off with fleeting speed from the beginning, twisting and turning, and never slowing ‘til the very last page. Monique’s character was believable, and although her behavior annoyed me at times, I understood her. Armand was a true warrior of the dope game and Kai was successful in illustrating his authenticity as a street savvy hustler on the rise.

Although I found the movie-like scenes to be captivating, at times I got lost in the quick exchanges of so many characters, causing me to go back to reread in order to fully grasp and comprehend what was going on. Light editing mishaps were also noticeable throughout, but these minor glitches were not enough to pale my enthusiasm. Hopefully a sequel is in the works to supplement the abrupt ending. The author leaves the reader hanging without closure; a sequel would be appropriate and highly anticipated.  Overall, this is one of the best urban novels I’ve ever read. Kudos to Kai!
