Poetry
RAW Rating: 3.0 (out of 5)
CHOCOLATE CHERRY MILK EVOLUTION is a compilation of 52 poems, the majority of them discussing the good, the bad and ugly of relationships and some social issues as well. Bomani, in his introduction, tells readers the first chapter of the book titled Chocolate Cherry Milk is his original poetry book, which he published in 1999 and the second chapter Evolution is his newer poetry used to complete CHOCOLATE CHERRY MILK EVOLUTION.
Poetry is very personal for the writer and this publication is no different. Most of the poems are given a brief introduction to allow readers to understand why he wrote a particular piece. Whether he was inspired by a woman on a subway train or the struggles of his love life, he tries to engage the reader in his thought processes. With such a large number of poems, choosing favorites was not always easy. “Stuff” deals with women who can only find love in things. “Everything” gives the his and her versions of what love entails, which are really the exact same things. Finally, “Mi Righting Style” was interesting because the things he mentioned in the poem are some of the drawbacks I found in the collection, but, it is his own interpretation of his art and we either like it or not.
CHOCOLATE CHERRY MILK EVOLUTION, for the most part, is an interesting collection. However, if poetry lovers are looking for a textbook type format, styles and rhymes, you will not find it here. The style is Bomani’s own and some of it is easier to take than others. It was baffling, at times, to deal with his own unique language of using words I know are not in the dictionary, which sometimes hampered my ability to actually grasp what he wanted me to take from a particular piece. Even though not all the poems were for me, several were engaging and interesting.
