Many times we look at public figures and wonder about the life they really live.  We wonder how different it is from the norm, where we define normal in our own terms.  We tend to put people in categories that society has already carved out, and try to make them fit.  If they don’t, then we cannot reconcile the image at all.  E. Lynn Harris takes a microscope to a public figure and his paramour in BASKETBALL JONES.

Dray Jones is a famous NBA star with a very passionate love life.  The issue is the love of his life is a man, and if the world finds out, his career gets flushed down the toilet.  So to keep his public image as the man's man in tact and maintain privacy for his hidden desires, Dray hides AJ Richardson away from the world, or so he thinks. But, little by little, questions begin to surface about Dray’s lifestyle.  These questions cause Dray to panic and as a result he marries Judi to quell all the talk.

The public sees a very married Dray and eventually a very pregnant Judi.  On the surface it looks good and the rumors disappear.  However, Dray continues his relationship with AJ.  Then a blackmail plot starts on Dray and follows with AJ.  Obviously, someone knows the truth and wants a huge payoff.  Who is the blackmailer?

BASKETBALL JONES gives a very detailed look at the down low lifestyle from those who live a very public life and the lover who has to deal with it.   Harris continues to do what he does best, which is to produce extremely well-written novels that shock and enthrall, as well as provide an educational backdrop for relationships society has labeled.  He is a master at developing characters that draw you in and keep you involved throughout the story.  I raised an eyebrow or two in a few of the scenes in which he orchestrated an erotic moment between Dray and AJ.  The potency, while shocking, was very tastefully delivered.  Fans will not be disappointed in his latest offering.
