THREE SECONDS OF GAME is a cross between a documentary and a narrative, which envelops the life of Silky Black. Silky was born in 1970, weighing a mere 2 pounds and 19 ounces, during a blizzard in New Jersey, and that setting was one of the things that help make his heart hard and cold. The other key ingredients were his lineage; his father was a pimp and his mother a prostitute. Silky never had a chance to be a normal child.
After his father was killed, his mother worked the streets to support them. With no one to guide his steps and with the pimping knowledge he learned from his father, Silky made his own rules. At the age of nine he entered the pimp game, at the age of eleven he was an up and coming player, and by the time he reached the ripe old age of fifteen, Silky was a big time baller.
THREE SECONDS OF GAME gives sketches of Silky's life, from early childhood to his morph into a 'gorilla' pimp. While readers will get a severe account of the pimping life, they will be left with very little emotional connection to the players. The book was not tightly written, and a thorough editing would have made it a smoother read. A plus for me would have been a brief peek into the psychic of the main character. I never really knew who Silky was.
