Things are far from holy at Deliverance Temple Church where Seth Reynolds is the pastor.  His marriage to Justine is a farce and has been for years.  They are both very much aware of each other’s infidelities although they are not privy to who their partners are.  If they paid more attention to each other’s trysts, they would know they were both having an affair with the minister of music at their church, T’Shobi Wells.

T’Shobi,a well-known gospel artist and minister of music at Deliverance Temple, is constantly running from his past.  Growing up in the foster system, he was sexually abused by many and as a result, he exhibits behavior that is very destructive.  When he realizes he has fallen into the same pattern as his past relationships, he decides it is time to move to a new city.  However, before he can tie up loose ends and move on, Seth is missing, Justine is lying in a coma and someone is sending him packages with information and photographs that will blow the doors off the church.

When I first started THE FIRST PERSON, I was like “Whoa!”  The drama started from the very beginning and kept piling up throughout the novel.  Although the drama seemed over the top, I saw several people I knew in the characters.  Long added suspense within the story line with several key characters being blackmailed, which kept me guessing to the very end.  Bottom line, the theme of the book is there are broken people who have painful backgrounds in the church – no one is perfect. I will be reading the sequel to find out if these characters, with whom I am now vested, will get the peace they seek.
