Fifteen-year-old Macon Cooper is a pinnacle in her life. Her father, who she loves dearly, is terminally ill and his death will leave her with her violent, substance-abusing mother, Nadine. Grace steps in, in the person of her Aunt Emma, her father’s aunt, who shows Macon a love she’s only experienced with her father. Emma takes Macon to South Carolina where she can have a better life and know the love of family against Nadine’s wishes. However, Child Protective Services steps in so Nadine has no choice. In South Carolina, Macon is exposed to a solid family structure and love like she’s never known. Reliving the nightmares of her life in Philadelphia with Nadine when her father was too sick to intervene, it was hard for her to keep her secrets enclosed inside. When Emma learns of the horrific incidents Macon endured, it unlocks secrets from her past. Secrets so deep that if revealed will rock the foundation of her family. When Nadine shows up in South Carolina to retrieve Macon, Emma sees the only way to get Macon past her hurts is to reveal the painful secrets of her family’s past. Set in the era of the 70s, SOUTHERN COMFORT is the tale of family and the painful secrets they sometimes possess. Nadine’s resentment towards Macon and her husband’s side of the family is spawned by a treacherous past. Emma recognizes that her own secrets parallels Nadine’s and knows she has to be the catalyst that will break the vengeful cycle. This book had me flipping the pages, my heart went out to all of the characters, even Nadine who was the hardest to like. The story is very well written, engaging and emotional; the kind of story that you wouldn’t mind revisiting.
