Devivia Jackson married Charles Jackson right after college, even though she had met another man at her institution she felt she loved. Her mother was determined that she was going to marry Charles because he was a star basketball player going to the pros. For eight years, their marriage goes well, but by the year 2030, when Devivia’s job begins to take up a lot of her time, it begins to get a bit rocky. Within the union formed by Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, her employer wants her to spy on South Carolina because they have a secret that is worth a lot of money. Unbeknownst to most people, Georgia and North Carolina really want to use South Carolina as a third world country, but the new governor of that state has figured it out. He is determined to keep his secret. Charles encourages Devivia to spy for North Carolina, and now the man she felt she loved years ago is once again in her life. Things do not go as planned and Devivia’s family is threatened. She is torn between doing her job and protecting her family. That decision is taken from her when her two-year-old daughter is kidnapped and will only be released when Devivia retrieves the secret. The action is on. NEXT LIFETIME by Gregory K. Morris is an action-packed mystery/romance novel. The formerly wealthy United States has suffered several economic blows and is in trouble financially. The US has a new emphasis on States Rights, letting each state deal with its own economic issues, which leads to the North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia union. Devivia is a strong woman who is still being ruled by her arrogant, oppressive mother and her husband. The characters are well-developed and it is easy to step into the future with them. It was an interesting take on the future, yet so close to reality that it was frightening. It is a book well worth reading.
