Maya, Nichelle, Vernetta, Special and J.C. had a special “sisterly” bond.  They loved each other and were always there for one another.  But tragedy struck and that “sisterly” bond lost a strong link.  Maya, at the age thirty-two died of AIDS that she contracted from her “down low”  boyfriend, Eugene.  Devastated and angry, Special vowed vengeance against Eugene for killing Maya, her cousin and best friend, by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against him with Vernetta being the attorney handling the case.  However, Special has so much hatred for Eugene that it clouds her judgment and it could possibly land her into big trouble.

Meanwhile in Los Angeles, prominent African American men are being murdered and the police have no clue as to why this is happening.  J.C. is a detective for the LAPD and is put on the strange case.  There are no leads, no witnesses the detectives could follow until J.C. discovers the connection between the victims, but when she shares her discovery with her boss and partner they don’t believe her.  Why are these men who are fathers, husbands, lawyers, doctors being murdered and who is behind it?  Could it be hot-headed Special or is it someone trying to frame her?

MURDER ON THE DOWN LOW delves into the world of AIDS in the black community.  It’s alive and well and growing stronger everyday and being on the down low is just adding more fuel to the fire.

I really enjoyed reading Ms. Young’s MURDER ON THE DOWN LOW.  The subject matter and character development were totally realistic. Although the book was over 380+ pages, the chapters were short and this made it easier to read the book in one day.  I was literally on the edge of my seat trying to get to the end to see who was the killer and was I shocked.

I recommend MURDER ON THE DOWN LOW if you love legal suspense/thrillers.  This is a great read of friendship, death, justice, and betrayal.
