What have I done?

MOTHERLESS CHILD – stories from a life by Sarah Gordon Weathersby is the sometimes heart-wrenching tale of a young woman who gave up her child for adoption. She was unmarried and pregnant back in the day when unmarried mothers were an absolute no-no, so she really didn’t have much of a choice. Abortion was out of the question; because it was illegal and only dangerous back alley abortions were being performed. Yet, it still broke her heart even though she knew her daughter would no doubt have a better life with a two parent family. She was not allowed to know who adopted her daughter whom she named Teal, or even if she had been adopted. Will she ever know anything at all about Teal?

Weathersby gives a look into just how life was in the 1960s, including dating, relationships with parents, female friends and how the social and educational scene was set up. Sarah attended college, was a brilliant student and as a result, her educational efforts took her to a school in Germany for a year. She did a beautiful comparison of how black students were ignored, not only in the USA but in Germany as well. It was as if she didn’t exist.

This is a wonderful book that brings back yesterday’s struggle for blacks in America. The social restrictions were many and Weathersby had a lot to overcome. The story includes other amusing stories also, such as how when she was a child, she over heard someone say a girl had been raped, and she thought they said ‘raked’. She imagined the poor girl being abused with a garden rake. MOTHERLESS CHILD grabs the reader from the first page and doesn’t let go until the end.
