FLOSS by Monica Marie Jones, first explains to us the class system in America: the upper class, the middle class, the lower class and finally the FLOSS – those who use material possessions to define who they are. Dionysus has the floss syndrome, she has feelings for Jabez, but she wants material things so badly, she isn’t faithful to him in any way. She goes after the men who can give her what she wants and needs: money, jewelry, clothes, cars and anything else that can make her look wealthy.

Three men, Jabez, Columbus and Abel, have been friends since junior high school. Abel is the most affluent, followed by Jabez. Columbus feels left out because he has always been behind the other two. He desperately wants to shine, especially in front of Abel. When he meets Dionysus, the first thing on his mind is to parade her in front of Abel, to make him jealous. He finally has a woman who looks good, dresses well and has money. Imagine his surprise when he takes Dionysus to a party at Abel’s house and Abel not only falls for her, but manages to take her away from him; Columbus is angry and vows revenge.
Dionysus has cousin, whom she uses, but stands up if a man or better opportunity comes along. The cousin is getting tired of Dionysus and she also wants revenge. What will happen if these two revenge seeking people get together?

Monica Marie Jones has penned an exciting novel that picks up speed as it moves along. She shows what can happen when material goods mean more than personal relationships, when the desire to ‘look’ rich outweighs personal responsibility. It is a short novel well worth reading, not only for the lessons but the tension and suspense also.
