Be careful what you wish for EVEN NUMBERS by Barbara Grovner amusingly starts out with a fly on the wall, observing a family and telling the story, but quickly morphs into a very serious account of life. Dominga loses both her parents at an early age and is forced to live with a cousin of her father’s. After the cousin abuses her sexually, she plunges into depression and becomes a loner, even though the abuser’s wife, Paula, attempts to get her to socialize more. Finally, she takes the advice and joins other girls her own age. Dominga is on the hunt for love, she is looking for what she feels she didn’t have. After hooking up with a young man who gets her pregnant and then leaves her, she becomes even more desperate. Then James enters her life, he is everything in a man she ever wanted. James is on the hunt for single women with young daughters. He can feel their neediness and he knows how to tap into it. James proceeds to give Dominga everything her heart desires, from a large home away from her memories to pampering her little daughter, Olivia. Is James everything he seems to be or is he something evil that has moved into their lives? EVEN NUMBERS is short and to the point, yet it develops each character so that an understanding of where they are coming from is easily discerned. Dominga’s needs are palpable while James’s are well hidden. The fly, who lets us in on the story, feels helpless to change anything and sometimes wishes he could be a bee and sting James. It is a well-written story that should be read by everyone. It just might make you keep your eyes open to what really goes on in this world.
