Choices
Being lesbians doesn't really alter the ups and downs of growing into adulthood or the problems that accompany it. Author Skyy showcases this well in CHOICES, her debut novel, featuring college friends Cooley, Denise and Carmen. They are all matriculating at Freedom University, an HBCU in Memphis, TN and as the school year starts, they're getting back into the swing of things.
Cooley is the playa of the group and doesn't mind her reputation on campus. She's known for her sexual prowess toward both lesbians and the bi-curious, but she's in for a surprise when someone comes around who makes her want to change her modus operandi. Denise has been hurt and isn't interested in relationships, but focuses her attention on basketball and taking the team to the championships. She finds herself being tempted between staying steady and crossing a line she knows she shouldn't. Carmen is the typical once-fat girl seeking approval from those around her. She doesn't really get that she is more than the size of her clothes and must decide if she's going to continue down the same path or follow a different fork in the road. And, rounding out the cast is Lena, a freshman, but already popular because she is the girlfriend of the school's lead basketball player who has his sights set on the NBA. She has a lot to adjust to, but isn't as sure of herself as she seems. These ladies must all make decisions that will affect everyone around them.
CHOICES is a well-rounded look into life and love, and added in is the viewpoint from an alternative lifestyle. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and seeing them work through their problems. What I really liked was that Skyy didn't use their sexual orientation as a crutch or an excuse for who they were and how they reacted to things. They were real and just like everyone else, they had choices to make and consequences which resulted from those choices. CHOICES will appeal to any reader interested in relationships and friendship.
