The old adage "be careful what you wish for" is one 15-year old Genna Colon wishes she had been taught. The third of four children being raised by a single parent, Genna is left with the responsibility of taking care of her younger brother Tyjuan as her mother spends her time trying to keep the older siblings out of jail and off the streets as well as providing food and shelter for the family.
To survive her unstable life, Genna retreats to her own private world in the garden where she spends her time tossing coins in the fountain , and wishing to be someone else, living somewhere else, and having a brand new life. Be careful what you wish for Genna. After a night of tossing and turning, she awakes to find herself in Brooklyn in the mist of the Civil War-era, asking herself is it real or just a bad dream?
A WISH AFTER MIDNIGHT is a perplexing story that weaves historical facts with fiction and social issues, bringing to light the treatment of blacks in the 1800s, during the draft riots in Brooklyn, New York. The historical facts about Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York have me wanting to visit the area to see the places I read about. Elliott did an amazing job bringing to life the trials and tribulations of a young girl living in a precocious time in our history.
