The emotional and verbal abuse Davidia Jones receives from her mother and classmates is enough to make any child draw into a shell. Her home environment is a revolving door of many men her mother entertains, her mother lashes out snide, cruel remarks while her classmates maliciously name her “Monkey Night” because of her dark complexion and unruly natural hair. Davidia retreats into herself and never speaks again. However, when she watches the movie, “Sixteen Candles” she feels all hope is not lost.
The new kid in school and heartthrob, James Farrell, doesn’t know Davidia is in love with him and is waiting for him to whisk way her away like the scenes in her favorite movie, but when an unscrupulous prank gets out of control, Davidia runs away and keeps on running until she stops in California. Fast forward several years later, “Davie” newly named and a singing sensation in a fashionable nightclub, transforms to a vision of beauty. Her life is going well until James unknowingly walks back into her life and falls in love with her. This is what her heart desired so many years ago, but the past rears its ugly head and casts a dark cloud on her dreams and future.
32 CANDLES is a poignant story of a young girl’s transformation from the “ugly duckling” syndrome to a beautiful swan. She blossoms into a woman who has full control of her life and learns to love herself. I fell in love with Davie’s character from page one. In Ms. Carter’s debut novel, she vividly paints a picture of despair and hurt through a young girl’s eyes. The colorful characters add a splash of comedy to this charismatic novel of love, self-worth, and revenge.
