Don't waste your life

Marvin D. Woodard tells it like it is in 101 THINGS A BLACK MAN SHOULD KNOW. The 101 things are heavy information that every young, black man should have at his fingertips. You Are Your Worst Enemy is Number One and it explains how getting a reputation on the streets is self-destructive. It is quickly followed by Number Two, You Are Somebody, that lets that same young man know that he is much more than he thinks he is.

Woodard goes on to tell young black men that they really need to know their history - their real history - not the history that gets passed off on them starting with slavery on the shores of the United States. Before slavery they were definitely somebody and they need to know and understand. The effects of slavery are still with us just as discrimination is yet Woodard gives concrete examples of how to overcome both those handicaps. He even tells how to avoid the stress that kills. He includes information on building wealth, preparing for retirement and fatherhood.

There was a lot of good, solid advice that any young person can use to have a better, more productive life, even though it was aimed at black men in particular. It was well written and concise. Woodard told it like it is without a great deal of embellishment which makes it smooth reading. It is very enlightening and should be read by suburban as well as urban black men. The book would make a wonderful gift for young black men. And I must say, I got some very good pointers from it myself.
